The Dexcom G6 is a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for people with diabetes ages 2 and up, consisting of a sensor that sits under the skin, a transmitter that attaches to the sensor, and a receiver (a smart device or dedicated receiver) that displays real-time glucose levels every five minutes. Key features include no required fingersticks for calibration, customizable alerts for high and low glucose levels, the ability to share data with others, and a 10-day sensor lifespan with a reusable transmitter that lasts three months.

How it works

  • A small sensor is inserted under the skin, typically on the abdomen or upper buttock.
  • A transmitter is attached to the sensor and sends glucose data wirelessly to a compatible smart device or the dedicated Dexcom G6 receiver.
  • The system provides readings every five minutes, along with trend arrows indicating the direction and speed of glucose changes.
  • No fingersticks are needed to calibrate the device or make treatment decisions.
