Get Started!
1. Consult Your Healthcare Provider
Before anything else, talk to your doctor to determine if CGM is right for your health needs. Most people with Type 1 diabetes, and many with Type 2 (especially those on insulin), qualify for a CGM
2. Understand the CGM System
A CGM typically includes:
- Sensor: Inserted under the skin to measure glucose levels.
- Transmitter: Sends data wirelessly.
- Receiver or App: Displays real-time glucose readings on your phone or device
3. Get a Prescription
Most CGMs require a prescription. Your provider will help you choose a model that fits your lifestyle and submit the necessary documentation for insurance coverage
4. Check Insurance Coverage
Prescription CGMs are often covered by insurance. OTC CGMs exist but are not suitable for everyone (e.g., not for Type 1 diabetics or those on insulin)
5. Set Up Your CGM
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to:
- Insert the sensor
- Connect the transmitter
- Pair with the receiver or app Some systems may require calibration using fingerstick tests.
6. Interpret the Data
Use your CGM to:
- Track glucose trends
- Identify how food, exercise, and stress affect your levels
- Set alerts for highs and lows
- Adjust insulin, diet, and activity accordingly
7. Integrate CGM Into Your Routine
Make CGM part of your daily diabetes management:
- Use insights to plan meals and workouts
- Share data with your care team
- Monitor progress toward A1C goals
